Recipe #12
ALL-AMERICAN SUGAR COOKIES

My mother-in-law makes these cookies every year, and it wouldn't be Christmas without them!!  This year, she put a little glaze on them and a few sprinkles, but they are good just warm, straight from the oven!

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
4-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup sour cream (no low fat - use the real stuff)
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:
Sift dry ingredients together.  Set aside.  Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.  Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with sour cream, mixing after each addition until smooth.  Blend in vanilla.  Wrap cookie dough and chill until firm enough to roll.  Roll out on a lightly floured board to about 1/4-inch thickness.  Use a 3 inch cookie cutter (or a glass approximately that diameter) to cut out the cookies.  If dough softens as you are cutting them, put back in fridge.  Place cookies on an ungreased or parchment lined cookie sheet.  Sprinkle lightly with granulated sugar.  Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly browned.  Makes about 5 dozen cookies.  These are best as a simple round cookie as they puff up while baking and intricate cookie cutters lose their detail.
